WIP Hornsea (demo)
on: April 21, 2021, 23:15:03
work in progress, a song called Hornsea
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/hornsea-demo/s-pJOpST2fPa7
Lyrics and chords hereunder.
The chords came about while improvising on my Hagstrom HJ800 guitar. The lyrics came after watching a series of three Belgian travellers walking around the North Sea.
All comments welcome, lyrics, instrumentation, mix - all tips welcome.

Hornsea

Em     Bm       F#m
Letís go round the North sea
   Am          G         C
To see how far we can go
B                    A               D
Through fog and rain on windswept cliffs
   D      E
Wherever the storm wind blows.

Chorus
 Em
Came upon the Hornsea
Where the coast was sinking fast
The future of the living here
Is written in the past

Navigate the sand dunes
beware of tidal floods
Keep your compass ready
when passing through the mud,

Like a tumble weed on a prairie
Or driftwood on the sea
Walk on the coastal trails
In the land without trees

Beyond our own shores
Thereís a water world we donít know
From shallows to trenches
To watch the blue wave glow.

Chorus

Came upon the Hornsea
Dolphins showed me the way
Sailing out of the harbour
as the night turned to day.

I can perfectly see why it's a WIP, but I am not convinced I know which direction you want to push it.

I tkink the secret is in the bass.
If you let it butterfly along, the notes light too, there is a very different development, compared to a sturdy virile bass that rattles the windows.

I wouldn't know what to advice you @oorlab , but it's a nice point to start off with.
Kind regards, Gus

Thanks @LePlongeur  - Gus, the bass is now a key board synth, and there fore sounds a bit artificial. I could play and record  a real bass-guitar. Before I do that, I want to know (either frmo myself or from comments here)  if tempo & lyrics are 'up-to-snuff'...

Kinda reminds me of  Al Stewart.............has that classic class about it. Bright, shiny, and poignant.
Good stuff, man!

This is a great song in the making. It tells an interesting story with a nice vocal and some adventurous instrumentation. I won't criticise anything as it's work in progress but I really like this. It's different. The arrangement is really interesting as it is. I'll be interested to hear the final version. :)

Cheers @ChrisPrice  - feedback is welcome. I'm in the habit of working on a few evenings in a row on one song, but then I sort of loose the flow, so some ideas what to do or not to do is welcome. Possibly it is finished though, and I need to not hear it for a few days, to get 'fresh ears:pompom:
@IronKnee  - Al Stewart, that's been a while. Year of the cat I know quite well, but know litlle of the songwriter. I just read he is from Glasgow. I thought he was American. Relistening to Year of the cat, I hear a Baker street vibe, by Gerry Rafferty.

I'm a fan  of your 'nature series'!
Your lyrics are very fine and  the instrumental often comes along to me in an unexpected very interesting way. So here too and the vocals are very @oorlab style, will be interesting how you will finish or alter this in a whole.
I admit i needed a short research if there are really dolphins in the northsea?! But they are!! :D :D

Here is a new public mix
https://soundcloud.com/oorlab/hornsea
suggestions still welcome.
I followed the suggestions from @LePlongeur  - played real bass instead of the synth one. And added a backing vocal in the 2nd chorus, and a tiny piece of solo guitar. Rest is unchanged.
