Wreathe (Christmas - habiTat)
on: December 04, 2013, 23:12:02
Hello everyone :)

Right, here is my effort for the Christmas song comp..

This is the two part song I've been working on, it's not directly Christmassy, rather about birth, life and religion (or lack of, depending on how you interpret it) The point being, we are all born, then make our way through life, most of us trying the best we can to do the right thing and be good people.

Now, I'm not religious in any way but I can (and do) appreciate what it provides to people and I can very much see the appeal. I've tried to create a church-like feel as I think it suits the topic well and I've always wanted to have a go at recording myself playing all the parts of a choir  :D

The reason it is called 'Wreathe' is that a wreathe is a circle, (a Christmassy circle  :D) and the circle is a good metaphor for life, you end up at the same place you started  :)

I hope you like it (btw some of you may recognise the second half, I made a demo a few weeks back which inspired it)

Wreathe

Cold night..
Star light...

Choir sings
Sacred hymns..

Peace on earth
One night one birth

A Baby's cry...
Another life...

when a child
Is born...
When a child
Is born...

Old man
With gold in his hand

Star above
And a world of love

Story old
Many times been told...

But hope lives on
In the angels song...

When a child
Is born...
When a child
Is born...

All I know
Is all I see
I was born
I came to be

They sing to me
Their sacred hymns
Sheltering
From icy winds

And if I'm good
To all I meet
And I am strong
On my own feet

If I call
Will you be there?
If I'm in need
Will you be there?

On the ground
Among the bark
Needles fall
Throughout the dark

My Family
They sing to me
And nature sings
In harmony

And if I'm good
To all I meet
And I am strong
On my own feet

If I call
Will you be there?
If I'm in need
Will you be there?

I hope you know
I'll do my best
And I will strive
To pass the test

And if I try
And one day fall
I wont regret
A thing at all...

This is really beautiful. You created a church-like feel indeed and it sounds Christmassy to me. The choir is awesome although it is not as tight as it could be - in terms of timing. But this is nit-picking. Very good. I like it.

I'm just listening to all of your recordings on SoundCloud. I like your voice a lot. Digger knows that this is a compliment because I don't much like male vocals. :D
What a guitar are you playing? Its tone is lovely as well.

cool, those choir like vocals in the beginning, but i like that second part even better, catchy, very catchy tune

ending is very abrupt, a bit too abrupt IMO, it didn't feel finished, but that can be a good thing

Thanks guys, I'm sorry I've not been around much, I've just got so much on at the mo, I've got a few mins now so I just wanted to say thanks.

@Katja, the guitar is nothing special, just a little Samick cutaway, the recording and little 'fake stereo' tip I got from Boydie really helps to lift it :)

@Dutchy, I agree it is quite an abrupt end, I did consider replaying the 'when a child is born' part again at the end but I was unsure. I quite like the fact that I've left the listener wanting more :)

Thanks again

John
