Young in Heaven
on: April 21, 2017, 16:11:45
Hello kitcheners! Like my avatar says 'disappearing is easy'. I try to make time for the forum and music whenever I can. Glad to see that the audience and contributors is steadily growing here!

Here is my latest contribution from my most recent collaboration for mix critique. Are the vocals loud and clear? Too much reverb, meaning does it sound too dreamy? General thoughts on the mix greatly appreciated because any issues there can be addressed. Below is the link and lyrics:

Young in Heaven
Lyrics by JL, Leo Bull and Emily Meyers

Verse 1:
Tangled lines a broken fishing pole
The July Sun
Embraced the Rocky Broad
Lord knows I'm no hero
Everyday one is born

Was no time to fear the river
Oh my failing arms
Need to be strong
I'd do it all again
I want them to see tomorrow

Chorus
Prepare yourself like I have
A new day
Brings only new  regret
We're the lost and found
I am young in Heaven

Verse 2:
Weathered tears fill a mason jar
The lives I trade for
Now a father's broken heart
Lord knows my soul
Could use a revival

Chorus
Prepare yourself like I have
A new day
Brings only new  regret
We're the lost and found
I am young in Heaven

i think it sounds dreamy because that's part of the track's identity. i think it's mixed really, really well.

What a voice - reminds me a little of Nanci Griffiths - really pure sound..

Great song, instrumentation and production as one would expect from you is top notch - wonderful really...

I'm no expert at mixing but it sounds spot on to me.. Vox clear, love the instrument choices - all of it really!

Great great sound @cosignsessions ..

@cosignsessions This is a pro recording. Well executed and brilliant vocals. Seems like you've worked hard with the planning on this track since the pieces really fits great together. I'm impressed!

Beautiful song, @cosignsessions . Loving the arrangement on this a lot, kinda takes me back to the late 90's and early 00's as I was instantly reminded of one of my favorite bands, The Corrs. She sounds a little like her, a very angel-like voice.

Right off the bat, I thought the bass was way too dominant in the mix and it totally drowned out the other instruments and vocals. I would also suggest that you take another listen to the lead vocals because it sounded quite hot in certain parts of the mix, especially in the refrains. Maybe a more drastic compression or detailed volume automation on her vocals could bring up the quiet parts as well as tame the louds a bit more? These are just wild observations coming from a noob producer/mixer but I hope it helps you in some small way. Really great song, man. Good job to you and your team!

All the best.

@revivalchoir appreciate the listen. Glad that the dreamy / reverb vibe is working.

@Zedd I will have to give Nanci Griffiths a listen. I would love to take credit for the production here, but my friend Trey Marshall took my demo and turned it into this polished track.

@marcus_jb the musicians that ended up on the track certainly made it all work. I love Boon's slide guitar solo. Guy is amazing.

@ImKeN Appreciate the mix critique! I will reach out to Trey and ask him to bring the bass guitar down a db or 2. I hear the vocal pronounce in spots. It could be that the volume automation needs a touch up and smoothing out. Especially on the 're' and 'er' sounds. I think the de-esser is over chopping in spots as well. Good ear!

I will echo these astute observations by @ImKeN . I think the vocals can definitely benefit for some volume automation and then a bit more careful compression to bring them to the fore better. I don't hear the lead vocal as hot...just somewhat uneven. Such a strong voice could really shine with a bit more body....compression.

I would wait before messing with the bass until you get the vocals in place....you might find that it is fine when your excellent singer is perfectly placed in the mix.

Nice song too, btw.  8)

I enjoyed this one a lot @cosignsessions

It's a really good song and I like the instrumentation. I wasn't sure about the drums at first but they do create a nice restrained feel to the song. The guitar is really nice, great playing and sound.

The vocals are really good but maybe a little thin sounding on my speakers but that's being picky.

cheers

@Leonard Scaper Thanks for the suggestions. I find myself agreeing with @ImKeN @Jurgen and you that the vocals are a bit 'thin' and lacking some low mid body. Given the airy-ness of the other instruments the vocals would benefit from a tilt and less reverb (which might be the culprit).

I will reach out to the mix engineer and share the feedback. You guys are a great focus group. Thank you for taking the time and I am glad the song overall is well received.

Hey @cosignsessions , that's another beauty from your camp! Mix/production sound pro as always.
I have a suggestion on the mix however. The lead vocal (wow what a voice btw!) sounds to me like there's an eq boost somewhere in the mids that makes the voice resonate a bit too much in that area.
I'd search for that mid frequency in the vocal track and cut it (don't use a too narrow Q) by 3dB to see if it helps before implementing volume automation/compressing..
Just my 2 cents. For the rest: wow, well done!!

I'm proud of this track, check it out! https://soundcloud.com/martimedia/dreams

@Dutchbeat glad that you like it. One of these days I will get a negative response out of you! Appreciate the listen and feedback.

@Mar T. I heard that too and your comment along with the others as convinced me that my ears (old as they are) were telling the truth. Trey will give it another listen in May and make some adjustments to the vocals. They really are the star of the show here! Thanks for the direction on how to fix the issue and appreciate the repost on SC!

@cosignsessions nice song! very interesting. the vocal melodies seem a bit detached from the chords in a very cool way. cant put my finger on it.
probably your personal style of doing things. more music should sound like that. i would try if i only knew how to.  :-\

@tuff bransch Emily did sing the song with some 'airy-ness'. At least that is the best way I can describe it. Gonna go back to the mix and focus her sound a bit more and repost an updated mix later on in May. Thx for listening and the feedback.
