@Dutchbeat

I like a good analog saturator like Waves Abbey Road to get some grittiness to mess first but Ive always liked running plug-ins out of order to get cool effects.  Something like running an analog tape delay sent into outer space, running that through a phaser, then smash compressing it.  You'll get all sort of crazy bouncing and slapping.

Basically, I suggest doing what you arent supposed to  ;D :ok:

Since words are a very important to a song I think clarity is important.  That doesn't rule out cool effects.

A lot can be done with an eq.  You can get a mega phone sound, radio sound bassy sounds and scooped sounds.

Like using shore slap back delay.

In Mixcraft there is an effect called Auto Filter. If you want wild stuff that's a great  effect.  Here's an auto filter plug in you can try. https://output.com/arcade/vst-plugin?campaignid=385849499&adgroupid=1235851256707882&keyword=vst%20plugins&msclkid=18f15d990b091b738f8002779dd642b7&utm_source=bing&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Arcade%20-%20Generic%20Keywords%20-%20VST%20Plugin%20-%20US&utm_term=vst%20plugins&utm_content=VST%20Plugins%20PM

Distortion can be cool.

I have duplicated track and moved on a few milliseconds ahead in time and one behind. It can produce some interesting sounds.

Chorus and flangers and phase shifters can give some wild effects. Gated reverse reverb is cool.

Duplicating a track  a few times and making the pitch slightly sharp and slightly flat can produce some good results.
Create!

+1 excellent advice from @Knate and @CGHound  IMO

Especially the duplicate track suggested by @CGHound

You might also try "enigma" if you're going the waves plugin route.
