Fear of Bass - Interesting Mastering Show Episode
« on: July 10, 2018, 08:40:09 »
Here is a link to a new episode of The Mastering Show entitled "Fear of Bass".

The low end of mixes are a perennial problem for many of us and one thing they particularly mention is not using blanket high pass filtering without thinking about it.

Well worth a listen I think.

=======================================================================================

We all want great low end - deep, fat, solid and punchy. But it can be one of the hardest thongs to get right - especially knowing how much of it is needed. Too much bass can sound boomy, flabby, muddy or dull.

And as a result, it’s easy to be scared of bass. It’s easier to be cautious and avoid all those possible problems, right ? Well, maybe. Except if the low end isn’t working in your master, you risk the opposite problem - everything can sound weak, thin and harsh.

In this week’s episode we talk about ways to avoid all these problems, including:

Topics we cover include:

* The one thing you shouldn’t do - and why
* The deceptively simple thing you should always do
* Will a sub-woofer help, or hinder ?
* How EQ for better bass can sometimes make things worse - because phase
* Dynamic EQ versus multiband compression
* How distortion might help
* Ah, duck it

This is excellent @MrBouzouki ! ..... but it is pretty long.  :) Most American's don't have the attention span for a 1 hour podcast. It took me two days to get through it.  :blackgrin:

You post all sorts of ‘how to’s’ and I am grateful that you do this.

But in this one it is the same as in France, Cataluña, Spain. When you’re there and they figure out that you speak the language, they rattle away like crazy.
Ignoring the fact that I may master another language to a certain degree, but that I am no match for a native speaker.

This bass doctor does that too.
The prospect of me listening to this machine gun speech for an hour dwarfs me beforehand.
It’s not your fault of course, but is there a way to tell guys like these they miss out on half the world population if they talk like this?

After 5 minutes I gave up. My life great as it is.

I embrace
My shitty bass

And I don’t give a flying shit what motor mouth thinks of it.
And to you (hero among heroes) I take off my hat and thank you for posting this.
Kind regards, Gus

Well @LePlongeur I could protest on your behalf.  >:D

I can put a little comment on his track saying "SLOW DOWN!!!"  C:-) Should I?

If you feel like it, please do.
And also please with the reasons involved.

My love and I look French. In fact we’re both partial French. And in large French supermarkets we’re addressed as if we are one of them. And this is the only language where it works. We answer in French and they are none the wiser. About the language I mean. I use my French twice as much as my English. By speaking French, I step into the French distanced and formal way to address each other. A far cry from the oh la la image they have.

English speaking persons have no way of knowing how easy it is to be able to travel and still have your own language at your disposal. You share this advantage with the Russians, a bit for other reasons. That's clear.

If I travel 300 kilometers in any direction, I have to be able to use another language.
And another way of loooking at things. All things.
In Portugal thank you is ‘obrigado’. Which means I am a boy and say thank you. My wife must say obrigada.
Go figure.

So if the video people were to be persuaded to take this into account they would actually scale up their audience with say 30 to 40 percent. Unless they only want to bass up native speakers. That would be a choice.

My ‘summary seems to have gone.
A foreign language is more than just another set of words.
It’s having to step into another social context. A list of do’s and don’ts. Therefore, people making a how to, have to consider this and slow the pace of their speech. Unless they want to cater for the native speakers only.
Thank you for ‘thinking along’.
Kind regards, Gus
