I'm bumping this thread because I think it is a great place for folks who are already mixing in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) to post tips or ask questions. There are already some very good tips in here.

But.....I KNOW that when the talk turns to specific audio engineering technique some folk's eyes glaze over quickly. Hey, I used to think that mixing was what you did with a salad, compression was how you stopped bleeding and side-chaining was how they got your car out of the ditch when they couldn't get at the front or back end.

Still...as songwriters, we are all recording our songs one way or another to post for review. I have some ideas as to how to make this whole thing a bit more accessible to the Luddites among us  ;D....so stay tuned.

That is exactly how I envision this thread. We all have things that we have been hesitant to ask about but that would help our mixes sound better if we learned them. I have seen that there is a wealth of knowledge here in the kitchen, so.......

Sidechaining (also called ducking) is when you use a compressor that is triggered by a specific signal so that it only activates when it gets that signal. It's very easy to do really. If you put a compressor that has a sidechain function (key input) on your bass track and send the signal from your kick to the sidechain of that compressor, the bass will duck slightly every time the kick hits. Your electronic music can really start pumping that way.  8)

Just put a send on the kick track and set that output to be the same bus as you set for the key input of the sidechain compressor.

Others with more experience than me might have other creative sidechaining techniques.

Hahaha 'I used to think that mixing was what you did with a salad, compression was how you stopped bleeding and side-chaining was how they got your car out of the ditch when they couldn't get at the front or back end'
+1!!

Ok I can't wait to hear your ideas @Leonard Scaper ! I'm thinking how to organize each subject.
I think we have to address each subject seperately, so (in case of Mix/Production related subjects/solutions) let's name our topics this way: 'Mix/Production : De-essing' and sticky those, so they're seperated from long and more general discussion threads. Is that an idea? This thread , for example, contains information about eg high pass filtering and side-chaining, so in the end that'll be two seperate 'Mix/Production :' threads.
If it all still gets messy I'll create subboards for the more general subjects like 'Mix/Production', 'Music Theory'. Okay?

I'm proud of this track, check it out! https://soundcloud.com/martimedia/dreams

I'm thinking about a thread that address the basic need for us to try to get our songs sounding as good as possible with simple everyday concepts rather than fancy mix mixing techniques. I know there are many who are a bit put off by the very thought of mixing and many who are recording in very basic ways who could still benefit from being more aware of a few things.

I have heard some very good recordings of late.....from @Mr Sydney for instance, and it would be cool if folks could share what they are thinking about when they sit down to record.

Maybe another thread where we all talk about how we are recording........by that I mean a "share your rig set-up" type thread. That would invite discussion about simple improvements in those systems that can be implemented without compromising the main thrust of simply capturing a new song.

I like your organizational skills @Mar T.   8)

+1 Absolutely, great idea! I noticed you have started that thread here: https://www.songwriter-forum-kitchen.com/forum/songwriting-ingredients/26/little-things-big-difference/2986/msg32936

That's always a great subject, we already started it last year: https://www.songwriter-forum-kitchen.com/forum/life/3/what-does-your-recordingmixing-studioroom-look-like/2247/
I moved it to 'Songwriting Ingredients' And it would be great if we continued that thread  ;)

Thanks man!  ;) I like maintaining a sense of simple, though logical structure (natural/easy to navigate) to organize our kitchen content on the site  ;) ;)
