Introduction to music theory
on: July 28, 2017, 23:10:53
Hey,

I have just came accross this online course and thought that it might interest some of you. It seems like an interesting introduction to music theory. It's offered by edx + Berklee college of music. It's completely free and has just commenced and you can check it out over here (see link below)... (and ps there are loads of other courses on various topics ranging from computing, engineering, arts, languages, music, design etc)

Thank you for sharing that @Rachel_D , great subject! I registered for an account and when I have time I'll follow the course. Let's see what's invented theoretically and compare that to what I've found out experimentally so far  ;) ;)
Kitcheners, what did you experience watching these bits of theory? Curious.. I'll report back when I've watched the complete course.
Cheers!

@Rachel_D  I've taken free courses from Berklee College before through Coursera on line. They have quite a few. You don't get your assignments reviewed or a certificate, but I think the courses are very good. It's how I met @AshBordeaux  - through one of the courses.

Hi @Rachel_D ,

Thanks. You can find some Coursera courses (as @Vince said) here:

https://www.coursera.org/courses?languages=en&query=berklee

If you want a certificate, you have to pay some money and get the minimum homework grades, otherwise it's free. There's also financial aid provided by Coursera if one wants to get a certificate. I haven't tried it myself but my friends have easily received financial aid for engineering courses.

Hey @Rachel_D wow, that's very nice stuff indeed, just went through the first 3 lessons. The time for me has come to go through the theoretical parts. Great instructor, and very well done, with the help of the Berklee students. Haha now I can hear 'My Bonnie is over the ocean' whenever I hear a major 6th interval! How are you progressing? Is it helpful to yourself as well?
Good find!!

@Mar T. : I'm starting lesson 3. (Will try to give it a push this week). Im finding it very interesting :D it got me randomly humming the 4th and 5th intervals..
. And improvising on Cm,Fm and Gm - I realised that I don't usually use those particular minor scales in my songs. I really liked the students' performances too - they are really talented! :)

Yes me too @Rachel_D !! Haha see if I remember:  perfect 4th had the first two notes of the wedding march, perfect 5th 'twinkle star' , major 6th 'My Bonnie is over the ocean'.
And the la..la.. major 2nd and la..la.. major 3rd keep popping up spontaniously when I wake up from sleep at night (that is,if I sleep). The major 7th was though the 1st few times..
Cool to hear you're expirimenting, looking forward to hear the results of the expiriments!!  ;) ;) ;)
I was at lesson 5 and then the amount of writing notes was increasing, and my interest faded a bit (I hate notes haha). But I'll gather my energy and hope to go on a few lessons!
Very nice stuff again!
