I was listening to a Chris Selim livestream recording with Nashville audio engineer and producer Lij Shaw.

As part of the video he mentioned how engineers used a clip on omni Lavalier mic (like they use for TC interviews on a persons lapel) to record James Taylor's fingerpicking. Clipped to the soundhole of the guitar.

Apparently it's no good for heavy strumming etc but great for fingerpicking but I thought I'd post this in case it's of any interest.

I am really glad you unraveled this mystery @MrBouzouki
I think i know a few guitarists with a language all their own and more adventurous, but I think no one ever came close to James Taylor’s Sound.
