Mixing Piano in Mono?
on: July 27, 2018, 05:04:15
I'm working on a mix here. Does it ever makes sense to put the piano in mono? Piano is acting as a background rhythm instrument only and I want it up to the right to balance the hi hat on the left. This mix is going to get pretty busy as it continues on but the stereo piano does put those hi note hits up to the right anyway.

@Leonard Scaper , @Mr Sydney , @Bluedusksun , @Mar T. , @MrBouzouki , @MichaelA , @DanJames, @Jurgen  ...... what do you think? Or, of course, anybody else what do you think? Anyone?

November Sound is based on the Mother, Father & Son musical trio of Melissa, Bill & Will. I'm the father so anything I post will have my wife singing and/or my son playing percussion.

not often that someone asks me for production advice, but I'll offer some unfiltered thoughts!

I vote for mono. The piano part will still have the desired rhythmic effect without hogging too much space, especially if you plan to add more instruments.

Less relevant to the discussion (so feel free to ignore!), but I don't really like that piano part at all, stereo or mono, with things how they currently stand. It seems unnecessary and drowns out the rather pleasant guitar sounds lurking underneath. It reminds me of the style that a school teacher might play to accompany a hall full of kids singing assembly songs (not the cool trademark NS sound). But the song is obviously under construction and you have the master blueprint in your head, so I'm sure it'll sound fab in the final mix. I look forward to hearing the result!

Below a certain volume the hi-hat disappears for me. So I guess one question to ask is do you want the hi-hat to be prominent in the song ?
I wonder if you have the right volume balance if that is the case as I guess on lo-fi systems it might just disappear too.
This might just be my old ears as I'm sure I have plenty of hi-end roll-off now ;-)

I like that nice bright piano sound.....it definitely has a specific character. I'm already curious as to what the song will be like.

The stereo piano is moving around too much in my headphones.....kind of disconcerting....and it loses that brightness. But for my taste, the mono track sounds a bit isolated from the main track......too far to the right. That may work out fine when you start filling more stuff in. You may end up just panning it further in a bit but there is a third option.

You could put the piano on a second track (or send it to a bus). Make that track sound a little different with a very short delay that is also very dry. I usually go with 9 ms at around 15% wet. You could also dirty that second track up a little with some sort of lo-fi plug. Whatever you do, make it very subtle. Then pan that track somewhere just right of center. As you mess with the level and position of that secondary track you'll hear that original nice crisp mono track start to fill out the right sound stage a bit more.

Mono for me Bill...it has much more punch. The stereo thins out that punch which to my feeble, studio damaged ears drives the groove....which by the way I love.

I liked the mono best, although as a single track it sounds a little thin at the moment, maybe because it is panned a bit too far out - as if you just turned one half of the stereo off without adjustment (?). Or maybe just do your usual stuff to thicken it up.

This sounds like it will a fun track @Bill from November Sound - something to look forward to!
If you like novels with a musical theme, why not try 'Sixth Beatle - When Music Changed The World', easily found on Amazon and Google. It is amazing, although as the author I may be biased!
