We all have something to say, but we need to find our way to say it.

Yes, finding the way to say it is our task. We are all right, if it works for us and accomplishes what we wish to express.
Do what makes your heart sing :)

I always start with a "hook" but it could be a riff, a lyrics phrase, a chord progression or just the way an instrument 'sound'.
I have a collection of such hooks lying around and sooner or later something will trigger it to become a song.
I've never been able to sit down and try to write a song based on a a theme of any kind, I always need that hook thing.

A good example is Whiskey On The Hurt (https://soundcloud.com/jambrains/whiskey-on-the-hurt)

I picked up the phrase "Pour Whiskey on the hurt" somewhere way back and it stuck in my head.
Much later I picked up a mandolin (that I had no idea how to play) at a flea market and the same day I went to see A Star Is Born.
That evening when I got back home I was trying out the mandolin, figured out some basic chords and the way the mandolin sounded, that phrase and movie suddenly triggered a new song.
Getting it arranged and recorded was a much more time consuming process  ;D ;D

That is the only way I know how to do it,  just wait for the stars to align and the pieces will come together :-)
Let man's petty nations tear themselves apart
My land's only borders lie around my heart

@Jambrains hello!! What a cool tune!! And I enjoy hearing about when the song was just like a piece found here and there, fitting together over time; and "Whiskey on the Hurt" is strong.  The stars guided you well!  :ok:

Cheers @Jambrains !! looooooong time no see!!  :pompom: happy to see you back here!!!   :pompom:

When I entered the kitchen (almost 5 ys ago) @Kellyanneg , I ran into @SoulAktor and we made this sound: https://soundcloud.com/martimedia/signals-demo-collaboration-of-martimedia-and-soulaktor?in=martimedia/sets/collaborations-competitions

He had a 'hook' already and I tried to add..

Just like you, I was searching. Great fellows here..  to collab with.. to help spark your own 'you'.. AND to help others to be themselves. Promis me we'll collab one day ok?

And I'm happy to see my friend Jambrains here today as well..  I think it's time we kitcheners (who know each other) start some new collabs and take all we learned to a whole new level.

Excited to see some 'ol' ' core members in the kitchen.. Apart from that Kelly, feel free to breathe here and join the songwriter journey.. you're not alone

Cheers!

That's so cool!  So @Jambrains really does the collection of hooks thing and it really works well IMO.

Then @Olbigead writes based upon things he cares deeply about … awesome …. I always hope that I can interpret the meaning of his music correctly.

That'll be cool to hear you all do another big collaboration!  :)
