I noticed when having to audition for a busking permit whereby they required your chosen song to be 3 minutes or less, how so many known famous songs were longer than that. Like 3:30 - 5 minutes.

I notice many of my own songs seem to be between just under 3 minutes and just over 4:30 minutes.

A good choreographer gives you the time to get into the specific ‘language’ of the piece that is going to be danced.
Or should I say: the story that is going to be danced?

US radio loved the short songs. Easier programmable etc. if your piece of music was over three minutes it was definitely not going to be played on most stations. Hence the enormous amount of singles that have a fade-out for an ending.

For these reasons, I am not overly keen on short songs. Under the 2 minutes and I feel cheated.
Maybe entirely due to bad taste and all. But I believe that we’re story tellers. And a good story under 2 minutes? Don’t think it’s impossible, but not very likely.
Just my opinion.
Kind regards, Gus
More on a sort of personal note:
My songs are in general somewhere between 4’30” and 6’30”.
And I like that. No quick and dirty for my songs....

 ;D ;D ;D i like it when a song / track is short

like the first release of
Situation from Yazoo, was 2 minutes and 22 seconds
but was followed up by longer releases, and even much longer releases...timewise, of the same song
and they were not better..just longer  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

which was ok too  ;D ;D ;D ;D  ::headphone:: ::headphone:: ::headphone:: ::headphone::

but is so hard.... to discipline yourself in keeping your songs, especially mixes of songs, short
me, myself, and Pie

Is less than 3 minutes to short?

I notice the big boys do 2:50 fake ending (for the radio) and then the song continues to around 4:00 real ending for Download/ CD . For today's real commercial groups this is pretty much like clockwork.

Anyway, I'm at just under 3 minutes and I don't have anything else really.

I know some of you do those hour long progressive rock compositions  :)  but otherwise what do you think? How many minutes do you shoot for? Do you do the radio ending/ real ending thing?

All this question of the duration of the songs
For my way of seeing is something that is already very far in time
Today everything is the same
Because the reality is that 85% of the people only listen to a maximum of 20 or 40 seconds of a song and that is with luck.
Because the most normal thing is that they do not listen to the songs of the strangers
That's why he thinks that TODAY the most important thing is the first 30 seconds of a song.
Because the rest sometimes you will not hear it yourself
I think there is always a thin line between reality and fantasy.
Crossing that line is easy
The difficult thing is to return to reality
And stay sane

you have 30 seconds to show off the song, if not, you lose your listener. P.S. In this 30 seconds, start off with a gentle chorus, like with just vox maybe, then go into your 1st verse. This is the time you have to keep listeners entertained.

Good thread to resuscitate .   :)

If you are looking for listens and new fans, the above principles definitely apply. I f you are just expressing yourself and following your artistic path......anything goes.

This gives me an idea @Dutchbeat  …. maybe for a future kitchen challenge? Songs under a minute? Songs under 30 seconds? That could be crazy!  :)

or @MrBouzouki and @Bill from November Sound

a two stage songwriting challenge in which we first  have to make a song which is under one minute

and then these songs are randomly allocated to another contestant, so the short songs are swapped, and we then have to make a 5 minute extended remix of the songs we get

a short-turning-into-long songwriting challenge

That @Dutchbeat is a winner .... and you have to expand the story not just add instrumental padding.
Very hard although some in the Kitchen are up to the task.
