Not sure if it's useful to you but it's a fairly recent video from Berklee.

"Stop tweaking and make the most essential changes for better songs. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to identify and amplify your strengths while embracing the imperfect characteristics that make your music unique. Find greater creativity and accelerate your writing process by doing the 5 things that matter most in getting your songs heard and appreciated."

Thanks so much for sharing @MrBouzouki , amazing how much you 'give' to the kitchen whilst being relatively 'new' to our site. Just make sure you also 'take' ok?  ;) ;)
Cheers my friend, I'll reply again when I've watched!

Wow @MrBouzouki I'd recommend this 30 mins watch to all of our kitcheners!
I loved her view on 'the underestimated power of repetitition', 'rest-space', 'contrasts in many aspects eg note length, chord progression frequency etc', 'clearly distinguished motiv', 'control what do you have to say', 'one or two chord grooves in the verses'.
Main lessons for me (for writing a new song) were:
-How do I define my framework? Do I have a melodical motiv?
-How do I create contrast against that framework? What aspects can I vary? Words, long notes, short notes, chord progression frequency, rhythm, temp etc etc etc..
-Who am I, what's my 'style'? What do I have to 'say'?

I also loved the self-critical questions she asks, about your own strengths and weaknesses.

Very interesting material, go watch y'all!!
Cheers!

Nice post @MrBouzouki  ::thumb:: My ASCAP dues are finally paying off!!! ;D

It is interesting that she was suggesting commercial pop music (sickeningly overplayed radio music) as the standard by which to judge one's own music. But, at the same time, she was alluding to the creation of artistic music as superior to radio stuff.

Honestly the second I start watching something like this I think, "what is the point in writing good music?" as you can turn on the radio for five minutes and quickly hear that the hit songs are anything but ["good"].

(Seriously, who the heck decides okay we're going to make this simple bass line, then we're going to auto-tune a singer singing three words over and over with a melody that is exactly the same as the bass line, then the keyboards are going to come in playing the exact same notes as the bass line, then the strings .....etc.  >:(...then the radio station plays it over and over and over at exactly the same times everyday so pretty soon people are desensitized to how terrible this song really is...........sorry.....)

So yeah, anyway, this video had some really good things to think about! I actually wish more of the popular music could follow some of the advice that was put forth.

most music today is too repetitive, e.g. Taylor Swift new song

"look what you made me do, look what you made me do, look what you made me do, look what you made me do, look what you made me do...
maybe have something like "look what you made me do, going wild, going thru, moving over to the west side and you made me do it too", just made that up, but like great songs, like thriller, that's how its done :) Trev

Hey @TrevorGilligan , imo it's very subjective if today's music 'is' too repetitive. We all have different tastes..
For me today's music sounds all the same, and in that context repetition adds to 'more of the same'.
I never underestimate the power of repitition though, to me it's a way to stress an important part of the message. But I'm not creating mainstream music, so I allow myself to repeat when I want to stress something..  ;)

Cheers!
:mart:

i have no problem with repetitiveness , but when a song chorus is "love me please, love me please, love me please, love me please" i think that is over board. Also yes they all have the same formula, copy + paste = no 1 song, it removes the artistry? to the song process!
